ACCENT MODIFICATION · VANCOUVER & BC ONLINE

Communicate with clarity and confidence.

Our Registered Speech-Language Pathologists help adults develop clearer pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation — in Vancouver and online across BC.

WHAT IS ACCENT MODIFICATION?

Clarity, not correction.

What is accent modification?

Accent modification is a speech therapy service in which a Registered Speech-Language Pathologist works with an adult to adjust specific features of speech, including pronunciation patterns, rhythm, stress, and intonation. The goal is improved clarity and listener understanding.

At Arbutus Speech Therapy, our speech therapists and SLPs provide individual accent modification sessions in Vancouver and online across BC.

Accent modification may help if…

You are frequently asked to repeat yourself

In meetings, on calls, or in everyday workplace conversations.

You work in a role where clarity matters

Healthcare, education, law, client-facing services, or public speaking.

You are a newcomer or internationally educated professional

Adjusting to a new work environment and wanting to communicate with greater ease.

You lead teams or speak publicly

And want your delivery to match the strength of what you are saying.

You are multilingual and want more control

Over how you come across in specific languages or professional contexts.

You are preparing for a high-stakes moment

A job interview, presentation, licensing exam, or leadership transition.

You have noticed communication barriers affecting your confidence

And want practical, structured support from a registered professional.

You received feedback about your communication and want to act on it

Whether from a colleague, manager, or your own honest self-assessment.

WHAT ACCENT MODIFICATION IS

More control over how you communicate. Not a different voice.

Many people assume accent modification means learning to sound a particular way. At Arbutus Speech Therapy, that is not how we work.

Your accent reflects your language history. Our speech therapists and SLPs do not treat it as something to be corrected. Accent modification is about developing precision and control, specifically in the contexts that matter to you.

We work on specific, measurable features of speech: how individual sounds are produced, how stress falls across words and phrases, how rhythm flows in connected speech, and how intonation patterns shape listener understanding. These are learnable skills at any stage of life.

Some clients come to us before a major career change. Others have been communicating in English for decades and want to address specific features that affect how they are heard. There is no single profile, only a shared goal of communicating more clearly and confidently.

Your accent is part of who you are. Accent modification builds the specific communication skills that help you be clearly understood in the settings that matter most, while your voice, your history, and your identity remain entirely your own.

What your SLP may work on with you.

Accent modification sessions are individualized. Depending on your assessment findings and goals, sessions may address any of the following:

Individual sound pronunciation

English phonemes that differ from your first language, with focused production coaching.

Word and sentence stress

Which syllables and words carry emphasis, and how that affects listener comprehension.

Rhythm and connected speech

How sounds link and flow together naturally in spoken English.

Intonation patterns

How pitch rises and falls to convey meaning, questions, and emphasis.

Clear speech strategies

Practical techniques for high-stakes situations: presentations, interviews, and phone calls.

Voice projection and pacing

Controlling volume, rate, and breath support for group communication.

Self-monitoring skills

Building awareness so you can continue improving independently between and after sessions.

REALISTIC OUTCOMES

What progress can look like.

Accent modification is not a quick fix. Speech patterns develop over years and shift gradually with focused, consistent practice.

What many clients notice over time: improved intelligibility in professional settings, greater ease in meetings and presentations, less repetition needed in conversations, and more confidence when speaking in their working language.

Progress depends on the features being addressed, your language background, the time you invest in practice between sessions, and individual variation in how speech skills develop. Your SLP will be direct with you about timelines from the outset.

Most clients practise for 10 to 20 minutes daily between sessions. Your SLP provides specific homework tied to your goals. For more on building a practice habit, read our article on improving your accent.

Extended health benefits may cover your sessions.

Many extended health benefit plans in BC include coverage for speech-language pathology services for adults. Coverage amounts and reimbursement processes vary by plan and provider.

We recommend confirming whether your plan covers SLP services before booking. Your HR department or benefits provider can usually confirm this quickly.

See our guide to SLP funding in BC for an overview of common coverage options.

THREE THINGS TO TRY BEFORE YOUR FIRST SESSION

TIP 01

Record yourself speaking

Speak for two minutes about something you know well. Listen back and notice where you feel unclear or hesitant.

TIP 02

Identify your priority context

Think of the one specific situation where you most want to improve. Clarity of goal speeds up the assessment.

TIP 03

Try a slightly slower pace

A more deliberate pace gives you time to apply techniques. Clarity often improves before anything else changes.

PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION

Accent modification is one part of a broader professional communication program.

Many clients who come to Arbutus Speech Therapy for accent modification also explore other areas of professional communication, including presentation delivery, managing filler words, building executive presence, or preparing for high-stakes speaking situations.

Our professional communication services are available alongside accent modification or as a standalone program, depending on your goals. Every plan is built around what you are actually trying to accomplish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is accent modification the same as accent reduction?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but we prefer accent modification because the goal is not to eliminate your accent. It is to refine specific pronunciation patterns so your speech is clear and confident in any setting. Your first language and cultural background are part of who you are.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your goals and starting point. Most clients see meaningful progress in 6 to 12 sessions. Your SLP will complete an assessment first, then provide a realistic timeline based on your specific patterns and how consistently you practice between sessions.

Is accent modification available online?

Yes. All accent modification services at Arbutus Speech Therapy are available via secure video teletherapy, anywhere in British Columbia. Many clients prefer online sessions for the flexibility, and outcomes are equally strong when you practice consistently.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly. Start with a free phone consultation, or schedule an accent modification assessment to get a full picture of your speech patterns and a personalised plan.

My first language is not English. Will my SLP understand my speech background?

Yes. Our SLPs are trained in cross-linguistic phonology and have experience working with speakers of many different languages. We approach accent modification with respect for your linguistic history, and every program is tailored to your specific sound patterns and goals.

Will my accent change in everyday conversations, or only in formal settings?

With consistent practice, changes carry into everyday speech. Generalisation takes time and deliberate practice outside sessions, but most clients notice real change in day-to-day conversations within a few months of regular work.

Does extended health cover accent modification?

Some extended health benefit plans in BC include coverage for Speech-Language Pathology services, which can include accent modification. Coverage varies by provider and plan. We recommend checking with your insurer, and our SLPs can provide receipts for reimbursement claims.

What if I only want to work on one or two specific things?

That is a perfectly valid starting point. Your SLP can focus the program on specific sounds, stress and intonation patterns, or speech rate, whatever matters most to you. You do not need to commit to a full overhaul to benefit from targeted, focused work.
